Lady Panthers host ‘Team Lauren’ Softball Tournament

The Lady Panthers softball team of Daviess County High School is hosting the third annual Team Lauren Cancer Awareness Round Robin Tournament this weekend.

Games begin at 5:15 p.m. tomorrow, Friday, May 11. The field is located behind DCHS. Games resume on Saturday with the final contest scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. A complete game schedule and more information are included (below).

The first pitch to open the tournament will be thrown out by Jacob Helwig, a junior at Daviess County High School who is battling cancer.

Other special events planned for the weekend include a short ceremony honoring cancer survivors and those lost to cancer. This program will begin at 9:45 p.m. Friday. The ceremony will also celebrate the life of Lauren June Girten, a DCHS student and member of the Lady Panthers softball team who lost her battle with cancer in March 2010. She is the inspiration behind this tournament, which has been held every year in her memory since she passed away.

The weekend will feature the best in softball competition with teams representing high schools across Kentucky and southern Indiana. The tournament will also be very meaningful to anyone whose life has been affected by cancer. Everyone is invited to come out and support a great cause while enjoying the finest examples of sportsmanship and teamwork by student-athletes.

All participating teams are encouraged to incorporate lime green – Lauren’s favorite color – into their uniform to honor her memory. T-shirts and concessions will also be available throughout the weekend.

Proceeds from this tournament will be donated to local families who are currently affected by cancer, including the family of Jacob Helwig. Donations will also benefit Hospice and the American Cancer Society.
