Veterans Celebrations At Local Schools

Our men and women in the military deserve the highest honor. Not just one day a year but every day! With that said, Veterans Day is coming up soon and it is a day to be especially thankful for these brave men and women. Many schools through out the Daviess Country Public Schools district are holding or have held events to celebrate. Here are some of the events that the schools are holding:

• Apollo High School will host its 10th Annual Veteran’s Day Program Wednesday, Nov. 6. They will serve breakfast to the Veterans and their guest beginning at 7:45 a.m. with a program at 9 a.m. that includes special recognition of Wounded Warriors. Apollo invites all veterans with ties to the school to attend our ceremony and breakfast.
• Highland Elementary School will honor family members of Highland students who are veterans of the armed forces on Thursday, Nov. 6. Breakfast will be served from 6:45 to 7:30 a.m. followed by a special honorary service featuring the Highland Choir and a guest speaker.
• Burns Middle School will hold a program at 9a.m. Thursday, Nov. 7, in the gymnasium. The program will feature a guest speaker and performances.
• West Louisville Elementary School invites veterans to be guests of honor at a breakfast from 7 to 8 a.m. Friday, Nov. 8. Breakfast is free for veterans; $1.75 for guests. A recognition ceremony will begin at 8 a.m. A military Humvee and other vehicles will be at the school. The Apollo High School color guard will also participate in the program, which will feature the WLES Tiger Choir and former student Ericka Lewis. Sheriff Keith Cain and Deputy Paul Gatewood of the Daviess County Sheriff’s Office, both military veterans, will also be in attendance. The entire school has been decorated and WLES will continue its proud tradition of honoring those who have served our country.
• Meadow Lands Elementary School will honor family members of MLES students who are veterans of the armed forces during a ceremony at 9 a.m. Friday, Nov. 8. The program will begin include breakfast, followed by a special honorary service. Their program will begin with the DCHS ROTC color guard presenting the flags. There will also be a video presentation, a performance by the Meadow Lands choir, a presentation by fifth-grade students of short essays and quotes, and a guest will perform “Taps” in honor of those gone before us.
• Burns Elementary School Veteran’s Day Program will begin at 12:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 8. The guest speaker will be Sheriff Keith Cain and the Apollo ROTC will be present present. Each grade level will perform a presentation in honor of the veterans. The Bobcat Chorus will also perform.  Refreshments will be served after the program.
• Daviess County Middle School will be host several special guests on Monday, Nov. 11. As a Leader in Me school, DCMS is always looking for new ways to offer students opportunities to demonstrate their strengths, as well as be exposed to strong leaders in the community. The students have been asked to invite any friends and family members who are veterans to join them at school at 7:30 a.m. that Monday morning for a special breakfast reception in the media center. At 8:30 a.m. the assembly will begin with student leaders escorting veterans to the assembly, introducing guests, and singing the national anthem. Four members of the Kentucky Pro Bass Warriors have been invited to share their stories. Hometown favorite and America’s Got Talent contestant Marty Brown will be providing special music for the event. The Veteran’s Day assembly is one of the largest and most impactful assemblies the school does all year.
• Audubon Elementary School will honor servicemen and women with a special ceremony at 7:30 a.m. Monday, Nov. 11. The program begins with a veterans’ breakfast at 6:50 a.m. The program includes patriotic songs and the Pledge of Allegiance.
• Deer Park Elementary School will hold a recognition ceremony in the school gym at 8 a.m. Monday, Nov. 11. The program will include traditional and new patriotic music led by the school’s Music Club. Students are making poppies in art class to distribute to veterans as part of this program. The guest speaker will be Dr. James Klauber, who is an Army veteran, DPES parent and president of Owensboro Community and Technical College. Veterans’ breakfast will be served at 7 a.m.
• Daviess County High School will honor veterans by hosting a ceremony at 8:25 a.m. Monday, Nov. 11. The guest speaker will be World War II veteran pilot Albert Hall who will share his story with students and faculty. DCHS ROTC cadets will present service flags. The program will also include an explanation of the fold of the U.S. flag as we do. Breakfast will be provided to the guest speaker and DCHS military families prior to the ceremony.
• College View Middle School will hold a Veterans Day assembly that begins at 9 a.m. Monday, Nov. 11. Breakfast with the veterans will begin at 8:00 a.m. The Apollo High School ROTC color guard will present the flag and the guest speaker is Col. Don Miller.
• Tamarack Elementary School will hold a Veterans Day assembly that will begin at 1:15 p.m. Monday, Nov. 11. The Student Star Council will participate in this program and the guest speaker is veteran Mike Gray, who currently serves as DCPS community relations coordinator.
• East View Elementary School is hosting a ceremony at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 12, for all local Veterans. Snacks will be provided at a reception before the program. Third-graders will sing, present a history of the United States, and share how veterans have served our country. They will also give the Veterans will also a handmade gift.
