In Skateboard Big Air, athletes drop from either a 50- or 65-foot-high roll in, hitting their choice of kicker ramps over an equally long gap, pulling one trick in the air before attempting another off the 27-foot quarterpipe on the other side. It's one of the most challenging and visually impressive events at the X Games, and we were there.

Fourteen-year-old Tom Schaar flew away with the gold (his first X Games medal), impressing the judges with a 720 over the gap and a 900 on the quarterpipe, despite the windy conditions that put even some the best skaters off their game. This makes Schaar the second youngest gold medalist in X Games history, and to do it he beat out Bob Burnquist, Big Air's most decorated veteran, who added a silver to his 27-medal collection.
