I remember when Towne Square Mall opened in 1978. The excitement leading up to the big event was palpable. Owensboro was finally going to get a mall.

Now, do you remember the very first Towne Square Mall store that was open to the public? It opened ahead of the rest of the mall, itself.

Yes, that's right. It was Sears.

And, my parents and I went out there. And it was packed. People would go stand and stare out from the entrance to the mall.

Well, now, that flagship department store will close its doors in early December. So will the Sears Auto Center.

Liquidation sales begin on September 26th. Other Sears stores around the country have shut their doors as well.
