 The Owensboro Lions Club announces the Soap Box Derby 2012, the inaugural race on their new 900-foot track in beautiful Ben Hawes Park. Events begin Thursday, May 31 and go through Sunday, June 3, with the actual races being run on Saturday, June 2.

The Owensboro Lions Club has sponsored the Soap Box Derby for 12 years.

Ribbon Cutting ceremonies begin Friday, June 1 at 10 a.m. with City and County officials and representatives from the Greater Owensboro Chamber of Commerce.

Race day begins on Saturday, June 2 at 8 a.m. This family event also features the USA Olympic Luge Team performing demos and offering the opportunity to take a ride on a slider luge.The USA Olympic Luge Team recruits young athletes, ages 11-14, to learn “slider luge” as a way to train and qualify for the USA Luge Junior Team. These athletes are taught the basics of riding a luge sled for the opportunity to qualify for the USA Olympic Luge Team.

The Lions will also have a baseball toss-clocking machine. Concessions will be available. Part of this year’s donations will go toward the Race for the Cure.
