OWENSBORO FIRE DEPT ISSUES ADVISORY
The National Weather Service in Paducah has issued a “Red Flag Warning” for our area from 11:00 am to 9:00 pm this evening. The NWS issues a Red Flag warning when weather conditions exist that can cause easy ignition and quick spread of fires in natural vegetation. In particular, extreme heat expected in the 103 to 107 degree range, low humidity, southwest winds near 15 mph, all combined with the already extreme drought and dry conditions can create hazardous fire conditions today with the possibility of quick spread and fire growth in natural vegetation.
The Owensboro Fire Department is stressing the use of extreme caution today. Those that smoke need to take extra care to use proper containers to dispose of cigarettes today and throughout this drought. Please do not throw cigarettes out the windows of vehicles, and do not discard them next to buildings, in mulch, near bushes or in the grass. OFD has already been very busy with grass, mulch and landscape fires caused by discarded cigarettes.
The Owensboro Fire Department is also recommending that during this Red Flag Warning that citizens refrain from the use of consumer fireworks. OFD also reminds our citizens that the use of consumer fireworks is prohibited within 200 feet of any structure or vehicle. Use common sense and extreme caution when using consumer fireworks. Read and follow all of the safety rules on the fireworks package.
