God used an innocent question from my son to reveal my greedy attitude towards food.

After a long walk in the park with the kids, I decided to treat us all to McDonald’s for lunch.  My belly was giving me the hunger cue so I enjoyed my burger and a few fries.  After a while, I could feel that my stomach was satisfied so I stopped eating and chatted with the kids while they finished their food.

My 3-year-old had devoured her fries and was almost finished with her apples, but she had not touched her chicken nuggets.  I asked her, “Are you going to eat your chicken?” She replied, “No, I don’t want them. You can have them,” and she amiably held a nugget out toward me.  As I took the nugget from her I explained, “No, thank you, my belly is full.”  Then I proceeded to bite off half of the nugget. My 5-year-old son was watching this transaction and he sweetly piped up, “Why are you still eating if you belly is full, Mama?” Humbled and convicted by his observation, I tossed the rest of the nugget into the garbage bag and told him, “I have no idea.”

However, the true answer to his question is that I was still eating because my heart was greedy for the golden fried yumminess of McNuggets.  For a moment, I forgot that food is only fuel and that my generous God had already allowed me enough in this meal.  I lost my focus for a moment.

“So let’s keep focused on that goal, those of us who want everything God has for us. If any of you have something else in mind, something less than total commitment, God will clear your blurred vision—you’ll see it yet! Now that we’re on the right track, let’s stay on it.” Philippians 3:15-16 MSG

If I call myself a child of God, I must rid myself of this greed for food and stay focused in the right direction.  I want to love God above all, and I thank Him that he used my son to gently clear my blurred vision so I can stay on His right track.  Praise God!
