The next time someone is taking a photo of you, make sure to show the camera your left cheek.

That’s because a new study suggests the left side of a person’s face is almost always more visually pleasing than his or her right.

To reach this conclusion, researchers had 37 male and female college students rate photos of both sides of people’s faces for attractiveness.  The students showed a “strong preference” for the left side of the faces. And they did so even when the image was reversed, making the left side appear on the right.

Kelsey Blackburn and James Schirillo, the Wake Forrest University professors who conducted the study, believe this is because left cheeks display “a greater intensity of emotion, which observers find more aesthetically pleasing.”

According to the pair, this is because the right side of the brain, which controls the left side of the face, also controls emotion.
