PORKY PIG DINER

Kentucky diner has developed following

BROWNSVILLE, Ky. (AP) — When Calvin and Ramona Durham opened Porky Pig Diner in south-central Kentucky about 19 years ago, Calvin Durham saw it as an opportunity to provide people with better food than he was used to getting when he traveled as a truck driver.

It is that emphasis on quality food that Calvin Durham said brings people to his small Edmonson County diner near Mammoth Cave National Park near Ky. 422 and Ky. 259.

The Durhams took over the restaurant in May 1995, and it since has developed a following among locals and outsiders.

Ramona Durham said the diner's success is tied to the fact that customers are treated as members of an extended family.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — The Jefferson County Board of Education is being offered a $150,000 grant to help pay for more than 200 football helmets to prevent concussions among student athletes.

The Courier-Journal reports the board is expected to vote Monday on the two-year grant from Norton Healthcare.

The 235 new helmets are four-star rated and are meant to replace many of the district's helmets that are rated two stars or below. Helmets are ranked on a five-star safety scale, with one- and two-star helmets considered marginal or adequate in their safety.

A recent report from the Courier-Journal on concussions among athletes showed that repeated concussions can cause long-term problems like headaches, depression or memory loss.

Officials say the grant would also be used to help hire athletic trainers.

AMHERST-HOME WINS RECORD

Amherst women's hoops wins 100th straight at home

The Amherst women's basketball team won its 100th straight home game Sunday, breaking UConn's record with a 73-63 win over Baruch.

The Division III school's streak started with a one-point win over Colby on Jan. 31, 2009. The Jeffs (3-0) haven't been challenged much at home since.

Amherst set the D-III mark last season, passing Rust College's 88 straight wins from 1982-89.

Amherst is now 29 wins short of the NCAA men's record set by Kentucky from 1943-55.

Sunday's game was tied at 59 with about 7 minutes left before Amherst went on a 10-2 run.

The Jeffs have been quite successful under coach G.P. Gromacki, who is in his eighth season. Amherst reached five straight Final Fours from 2009-13 and won the 2011 national championship.

ARMY-SURVIVOR SERVICES

Families of fallen soldiers get new home

FORT CAMPBELL, Ky. (AP) — The oldest surviving structure on the Fort Campbell Army post is now being used to help a different kind of survivor: family members of fallen soldiers.

Fort Campbell dedicated the Parrish House as the Survivor Outreach Services building as part of Military Survivor Appreciation Week.

The structure was built in 1833 and is a plantation-style farmhouse that has been home to all commanding generals of the 101st Airborne Division since 1947.

The Leaf-Chronicle reports the house was condemned when the sprawling post along the Kentucky-Tennessee border was constructed, but fate has intervened to save it time and time again.

Suzy Yates of Fort Campbell Survivor Outreach Services says she hopes it will be "a place of new beginnings and of hope" for families who use it.
