Dave Spencer’s Picks for the Best Written ‘Mother/Mama’ Songs [VIDEO]

If there's a staple in country music outside of, say, the "drinking" song, it's the "mama" song. There are tons of them. But there are three that I consider to be the most powerful of the bunch, and not all of them will put a smile on your face.

In the headline, I called them the three best-written songs about mothers because that's what I think they are. I didn't say my FAVORITES because one's a little dark and another is incredibly dark. And darkness isn't something one should associate with mothers...although each finishes with a varying ring of victory.

(Plus, those two mentioned just above have "dad" or "daddy" in the title. So it's a little odd at first glance.)

But, again, it's the writing that wins the day here. And so I give you:

"Mama Knows" by Shenandoah (written by Tony Haselden and Tim Mensy)

"So Much Like My Dad" by George Strait (written by Chips Moman and Bobby Emmons)

"To Daddy" by Emmylou Harris (written by Dolly Parton)
